Blue Hill at Stone Barns Wedding: Liz and Gabe

There is something that is really special about a Blue Hill at Stone Barns wedding in autumn! The fall foliage for Liz and Gabe was spectacular and made for some incredible scenery for portraits with our photographer Fiona Conrad. Gabe’s friend is an artist who creates wind art using a machine setup in a certain place for a while that captures movements on paper with the power of the wind in that place. Gabe commissioned some of her artwork and Fourteen Forty used the artwork in a combination of metallic copper and navy for the invitation suite. It was modern and really unique!

Liz wore a stunning Monique Lhuillier gown, which Julie Sabatino from the Stylish Bride had helped her to find. It had romantic long lace sleeves and a crisp skirt with dramatic train. The bridal bouquet from Poppies and Posies featured cafe au lait dahlias, ranunculus, spray roses and chocolate cosmos. To remember her father, she wrapped his navy tie around the bouquet. The bridesmaids wore deep burgundy off the shoulder gowns. For most of the wedding, Liz had elegant white lace shoes, but late night she had these gorgeous red velvet slippers to change into. The bride should always have at least 1 extra pair of shoes to change into! I like to recommend having a pair of platform wedges about the same height as your wedding shoes and a pair of flat shoes for late night. Even a nice pair of rain boots if you’re going to an outdoor area which might be muddy!

Due to the early sunset in November, we decided to have the ceremony in the hayloft instead of the courtyard. Poppies and Posies did an amazing job bringing that gorgeous New York fall feel indoors with a stunning palette of dusty rose, burnt orange and red wine tones. The blend of colour in the green to red leaves were absolute perfection. In addition to the florals in copper vases, we had plenty of lanterns and candles to decorate the space. The dining tables get cleverly hidden behind drapes in the corners of the upper Hayloft and during the cocktail hour everyone works on flipping the room from ceremony to dinner setup.

While we were all busy flipping the room upstairs, guests were invited to cocktail hour downstairs in the Haybarn. We brought in lounge furniture from Patina Rentals to decorate the space and create cozy areas for guests to sit and chat. For cocktail tables we brought in La Tavola’s iridescent chestnut dupionique which had a nice sheen and complimented the fall colours. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres including the fun potato farm bites pictured below which come with three different dipping sauces. Always a crowd favourite!

The escort cards were setup a beautiful wooden table in the Silo Lobby with escort cards that continued the dramatic wind art from the invitation suite. These were calligraphed by Mary Ellen in metallic copper. Nestled among the cards were scalloped copper votive candles casting a warm glow as guests picked up their cards. Poppies and Posies added a statement floral piece of fall lusciousness with pomegranates and persimmons at the base.

For dinner, we used a beckett marine blue from La Tavola which really made the flowers pop. The blue worked so well in the Hayloft, I can’t wait to use a blue linen again in that room! Guests dined on potato pizza, Maine lobster and striploin of beef. The wedding cake from Nine Cakes had metallic copper brush strokes and a tumble of sugar flowers to match the real flowers on the table. Inside was vanilla and raspberry cake with chocolate and salted caramel frosting. Later into the evening, we had three passed desserts which kept everyone fueled for the dance floor. Blaire Reinhard Band played an amazing set and all generations hit the dance floor! We used the escort table to display wedding favours as guests were leaving and they took home Blue Hill cookies in muslin bags and traditional sugared almonds. For Italian weddings, the five almonds signify five wishes for the newly weds: health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity.
