Blue Hill at Stone Barns Fall Wedding

That transition between the end of summer and early autumn is so beautiful.  The bride wore a custom gown by Carol Hannah.  The Lutosa ballgown with exposed boning and seamed bodice in a brushstroke organza jacquard, woven exclusively for Carol Hannah in Italy.  She carried a bouquet with blush café au lait dahlias.  The groom wore a pale grey suit and a boutonniere with seeded eucalyptus.

Poppies and Posies built the chuppah in front of the large tree in the courtyard.  A natural, wooden chuppah with delicate seasonal smilax vine, creamy white lace hydrangea, green and tan grasses, petite white dahlia, blush quicksand garden rose and soft white spray garden rose woven through delicately as if they were naturally growing on the vine.  Floral treatments along the back of the chairs at the beginning of the aisle included single varieties clustered together to make the arrangements more visually interesting. Delicate soft-white lace hydrangea, green and tan grasses, petite creamy white dahlias, blush quicksand garden rose and local queen annes lace were used.

After the ceremony in the courtyard, guests adjourned to cocktails in the main restaurant.  A saxophone and guitar duo from Hudson Project provided the tunes.  The escort cards were hand calligraphed by Ink and Nibs with some watercolour greenery details printed on the inserts.  Guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres: lunch box peppers and pepper jelly, oysters and tomato cloud, tomato burgers, cantaloupe shooters, sweet corn soup and lemon verbena, squash with lobster and caviar, donko donuts and fish croquette.  Their signature cocktail was Blue Hill Orchard (tequila, mezcal, peach, peach leaf, allspice dram) and their zero proof cocktail was Berries on a Summer Evening (summer berries, jasmine tea, maple and Seedlip Spice).  Berries on a Summer Evening also pairs well with gin or mezcal!

Before the couple joined cocktail hour, I showed them the dinner reception room and they managed to have a rehearsal of their first dance to “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” as the Hudson Project was doing their sound check at the same time!  With 163 guests we were able to have the full band setup with a small dance floor for the first dance and parent dance.  We had 2 rows of long tables along the center of the room and round tables near the windowed walls of the upper Hayloft.

Each long dinner table had a collection of petite arrangements and matte-white ceramic bud vases in varied heights and sizes. A few ceramic dishes displayed delicate ikebana-inspired arrangements. Seasonal, local watermelon-hued dahlias paired with coral romantic antic garden rose, peach zinnia and café au lait dahlias. Local queen annes lace paired with white cosmos, grasses and scabiosa.  Ceramic pillar dishes and parchment ribbed pillar candles gave the tables a lovely glow.

For dinner:

I Beet and tomato gazpacho, olive oil ice cream

Domaine Roger Neveu ‘Cotes des Embouffants’ Sancerre, Loire Valley, France 2020

II Raviolo, lobster, herb pistou, smoked pepper sauce

Pres’quile Winery Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County, California 2019

III Grass-fed beef, corn puree, piperade

Chateau d’Arsac ‘Le Kid d’Arsac’, Margaux, Bordeaux 2018

IV Wedding cake, chocolate einkorn, chocolate mousse, honey buttercream

After dinner, Hudson Project’s horn players made a mini second line to bring guests downstairs for the horah and dancing!  We setup the full band in the lower Haybarn, with some some lounge seating from Patina in the Haybarn and Courtyard.  On their way out, we setup favours for the guest to take, which included wrapped flowers, Blue Hill chocolate chip cookies and buttermints.  Ink and Nibs made a lovely sign with the text “In memory of Nana, who would never leave a restaurant without a napkin full of buttermints for (her grandchildren), please take some for the road!”
