Blue Hill at Stone Barns Wedding: Sara and Harrison

Sara and Harrison lucked out with the most beautiful day at Blue Hill at Stone Barns.  It was warm during the day in August, but when the sun went down it really cooled off, and most importantly no rain!  The first introduction to the wedding was their save the date from Suite Paperie, which had a custom illustration of the entrance to the courtyard at Blue Hill at Stone Barns and their dog Josie.  This was followed by their letterpressed invitation suite with delicate painted florals wrapped with an elegant ribbon.

The wedding party got ready at The Opus, which is where Sara had her sweet sixteen party!  When the ladies arrived at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, we brought Sara to the bridal suite to get dressed with her mom Sharon helping.  The 11 bridesmaids went to the Private Dining Room to get settled.  The groom and 11 groomsmen were welcomed to the restaurant front lounge area and we sneaked Sara through the kitchen, so she could have a first look with her bridesmaids in the glass loggia before going out to the shed for a first look with Harrison.  Sara wore a Mira Zwillinger gown with matching veil and carried a white bouquet of roses.  Around Sara’s bouquet, Poppies and Posies wrapped a portion of her mom’s wedding veil and a tree of life necklace that her great grandmother had given her.

The chuppah in the courtyard was adorned with white roses, hydrangea, lisianthus and spray garden roses.  Similar florals including white stock and delphinium decorated the pathway of the aisle.  It made for quite the grand entrance!  With the large format event at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, we have the restaurant space, so we decided to have the wedding party come out of the restaurant front door and process to the chuppah that way.  Sterling Strings played for the ceremony.  For the groom “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, for the processional “Here Comes The Sun”, for the bride “Your Song” and for the recessional “You Are The Best Thing”.  They always sound amazing!

The Blake Band took over the music from cocktail onwards, with a vocals and guitar trio for cocktails in the restaurant and terrace.  For their signature cocktails:

  • Hers - sake lees gin, cucumber vermouth & cardamom

  • His - tequila, mezcal, tomato water, lemon & spare tonic

In addition to the 8 passed hors d’oeuvres, guests also got to enjoy beetfurters (mini pork and beet “hotdogs” straight from the outdoor grill) and the fresh bread from the Blue Hill at Stone Barns bakery.

For dinner in the upper Hayloft, we brought in wooden farm tables and crossback chairs from Party Rental Ltd.  To soften the farm tables, we used a white aurora runner from BBJ La Tavola.  The round tables had the luke chalk linen.  Each place setting had a textured ivory Yuma napkin with the menu tucked inside and a sprig of green rosemary on top.  We added place cards for the long tables. Names in an elegant script and a hand pressed wax seal incorporating unique dried flowers for each.  Suite Paperie did such a wonderful job coming up with all these special touches.  The room looked so elegant with all white flowers from Poppies and Posies, including a 15 foot installation on the windowsill! With 175 guests we had just enough room for a small dance floor upstairs, so we did the first dance and parent dances upstairs.  With a wonderful acoustic guitar duo from the The Blake Band.  For dinner:

  • First - Heirloom Tomato, summer fruits & vegetables / Domaine Roger Neveu ‘Côtes des Embouffants’ Sancerre, Loire Valley, France 2020

  • Second – Cavatelli, mushroom & SarVecchio / Pres’quile Winery Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County, California 2019

  • Third - Grass Fed Beef, smoked eggplant & eggplant ratatouille / Château d'Arsac 'Le Kid d'Arsac,' Margaux, Bordeaux 2018

  • Wedding Cake - chocolate einkhorn cake, chocolate mousse, honey buttercream

After Sara and Harrison cut the wedding cake and said a few words, they invited everyone downstairs for dancing.  While guests were enjoying dinner upstairs, we were busy setting up the downstairs haybarn and courtyard for dancing.  We brought in lounge furniture from Taylor Creative with two different styles for inside and outside.  Pegasus setup bistro lights in the courtyard and fairy lights in the haybarn, uplighting all around the courtyard and highlighting all the important areas.  Poppies and Posies added their flower touches, added mini disco balls and moved the ceremony aisle florals to the band stage.  We used some of Blue Hill at Stone Barns café tables for additional seating and brought in some highboys with linens to surround the dance floor.  Once we had most of the guests downstairs, we did the horah in the haybarn before starting an epic dance party with The Blake Band.  The wedding cake was passed downstairs and extra desserts in the form of s’more semifreddo, lemon verbena & peach doughnuts and buckwheat brownies.  Late night we transitioned from the band to a DJ and savoury snacks were passed: mozzarella sticks, chicken sliders and mini reubens.  It was such a wonderful celebration for Sara and Harrison!
