Memory Boxes

When people ask me where I'm from, my answer tends to be rather complicated.  I am ethnically Chinese and was born in Malaysia.  I moved to Cambridge in '86, back to Malaysia in '91, Singapore in '93, Cambridge in '97, London in '04, New York in '06 and have lived in Manhattan since.

For my be-early birthday in Italy, my sister gave me an amazing gift that I will treasure.  She came across Thurle's work at a gallery in London and commissioned this piece of memory boxes for me.  Each box is the map of a place that represents a memory for me.  From the top left:

  1. Perse School for Girls, Cambridge, UK - my sixth form school
  2. University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - where I was born
  3. Naples, Florida - where my husband and I go to golf in the winter
  4. Raffles Girls' School, Singapore - my secondary school
  5. Komodo, Indonesia - honeymoon stop #1 where we did 3-4 dives a day
  6. Trinity College, Cambridge University, UK - where I went to university
  7. Bali, Indonesia - honeymoon stop #2
  8. Chelsea, NY - where I work
  9. Arbury Primary School, Cambridge, UK - my primary school
  10. Tuscany, Italy - some of my happiest summer vacations
  11. Taman Megah, Malaysia - my childhood home
  12. Perhentian Islands, Malaysia - where I did my open water, advanced and dive master training
  13. Napa, California - great wine and food trips
  14. Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, MA - where my husband proposed
  15. Wave Hill, NY - where we were married
  16. Midtown, NY - my first apartment in NY

I love this present!  It brings back such fond memories for me.  It would make for a great wedding or anniversary present too.
